    Bink Video Codec For Mac

I've checked previous posts and I can see that this topic has been brought up before (a few years ago) but no one has really provided any sort of conclusive answer. Bink is a pretty popular video codec used in many games, but as far as I know the only way to play Bink/Smacker files is with the Bink/Smacker tools, which offers very limited playback functionality. Are there any plans to add support to VLC? Is there some kind of licensing issue that prevents this? Some kind of official answer would be nice.: ).

As said you need to licence the SDK. Bink is targeted at professional developers with money (their clients have included companies like Blizzard in the past). I would suggest you use AVI with something like DivX 5 for your movies (you can't legally distribute the DivX codec with your game without a licence, though you can provide a link to download the free version). Bink is a high color version of Smacker (Smacker being designed for 256 color mode). Both are are designed with CD streaming and 'fast' decoding in mind. This results in a reduction in quality or size over normal video formats.

A better question might be why are your videos in Bink format? If you used RAD tools to convert to Bink format from something else then you've obviously visited their site, where licencing and SDK links are plainly visible. Are you trying to use copyright content from someone elses game? Alternatively, since you're using DirectX already, thus running on a Windows machine, why not just use DirectShow with a codec such as Microsoft's WMV. There's nothing to pay as long as you're using it under Windows, unlike the alternatives. Having said that, Bink is good, I've used it in the past.

It's very simple to use (4 C calls to do everything) because it's designed to do one thing (play movies), for one market (games) so it can do it well (specialism). If you can afford it or need to also run on Mac, Xbox & GameCube, it might be the better choice (PS2 has a proprietary hardware backed system based on MPEG2). Simon O'Connor &.
